Practicums, Internships & Volunteering
Walnut Forest Academy works in partnership with individuals, colleges and universities to offer unpaid practicums and internships. We support students in completing a course or their diploma or degree in a field of study involving children. We also welcome volunteers who wish to gain experience working in a school environment to assist in their future career.
Practicums
We work in partnership with university programs and course instructors where students are required to complete practicum placements in a school setting as part of their degree requirements.
If you are interested in partnering with us, inquire for more information.

Internships
We welcome individuals who are interested in working in a unique nature-based private school environment to learn more about holistic education and restorative practices. Our internships provide an excellent opportunity to develop new skills and work closely with a diverse group of children.
We offer internships to teacher candidates in education programs, students in diploma-based college programs, undergraduate and graduate students in diverse university fields of study, as well as recent college or university graduates. Independent studies also fall under internships.
Volunteering
Walnut Forest Academy welcomes the generous time and effort of volunteers to support our school. As a growing school, there are many ways we could use the support of individuals. Here are a few ways volunteers can help:
- Are you interested in working with children as a career and need to gain volunteer hours for your resumé? Join us in the classroom!
- Are you creative? Do you enjoy drawing or writing? Create resources and materials for our learning stations such as sensory bins, math games, pre-writing activities, art projects, and so forth.
- Do you enjoy landscaping or simple yard work? Our forest is always a work in progress that could use extra hands and muscle to maintain.

We thoroughly vet all individuals before agreeing to a practicum, internship or volunteer position at our school. All individuals who come in contact with our students must go through an interview process, provide references and submit a vulnerable sector check.
Supervision & Mentorship
All practicums, internships and volunteer positions are supervised by our school Principal, Dr. Traci L. Scheepstra, PhD. She has an extensive background teaching at the university level in teacher education as a course instructor, practicum supervisor, and internship advisor.
