Most people think about math, science, language, and a myriad of other core subjects children learn when attending school.
In fact, academics tend to be the primary focus to determine student success in most school settings.
While learning is a key reason WHY children attend school, it goes well beyond the ABCs and 123s.
At Walnut Forest Academy we nourish the whole child to develop a love for learning, a deep sense of self, a curiosity about the world around them, and the ability to think creatively and critically so they can experience meaning and purpose in their lives.
We do this first and foremost by building a welcoming and caring community where children feel a sense of belonging and are excited to attend school.
Children who feel genuine belonging in their community are much more likely to be engaged in learning as it allows them the freedom to . . .
- Be curious
- Ask questions
- Take risks
- Test ideas
- Make mistakes
- Solve problems
Learning comes naturally when there are no obstacles in the way to deter the process. Happy and engaged children are like plants absorbing water in that they soak up all the goodness around them.
Do we teach academic subjects? YES!
However, in teaching to the whole of the child–mind, body, heart, spirit–our students experience learning in ways that will impact their entire lives.
Not only will they be life-long learners, but they will know who they are, what their strengths are, and how to pursue their interests.
Pluuuuuuuussss (and this is a BIG one!) . . .
By being part of a loving community they will develop critical communication and conflict resolution skills that support life-long healthy relationships.
We believe this is what school should be all about!
